Charter Alternative Programs Awarded Six Year WASC Accreditation

After a thorough review of its programs and practices by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Charter Community School has been awarded another six-year term of accreditation, the longest available.

Highlights from the WASC Visiting Committee's report about Charter Alternative Programs:

  • “Each program is characterized by trust, professionalism, and high expectations for students.”
  • “The Self-Study was well-written and thorough; however, it did not prepare the VC for the highly professional atmosphere, collaborative spirit, and wonderful experience of being on each campus.”
  • “Students were also enthused and eager to share their appreciation for their placement within the Charter. Concrete examples were given of project based learning, care and concern from the teachers, safe and welcoming school climate, and academic success.”
  • “One of the most frequent comments (from families) was that the students want to go to school each day now rather than the prior heavy resistance to attending their traditional school setting. All of this positive energy will continue to support the Charter school improvements.”
  • “Positive changes, consistent growth, and a clear focus have been established.”

The length of the accreditation serves as formal and public recognition that our programs have met rigorous, research-based standards in all of the following areas, which reflect the essential elements of a quality and effective school:

  1. Organization: Vision and Purpose, Governance, Leadership and Staff, and Resources
  2. Standards-based Student Learning: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and Accountability
  3. Support for Student Personal and Academic Growth

The accreditation reflects our demonstrated commitment and capacity to make continuous improvement and a strong correlation to existing student achievement results and growth and current programmatic and operational actions.  A six year WASC Accreditation signifies the following:

  • Certification to the public that the school is a trustworthy institution of learning
  • Validates the integrity of a school’s program and student transcripts
  • Fosters improvement of the school’s programs and operations to support student learning
  • Assures a school community that the school’s purposes are appropriate and being accomplished through a viable educational program
